How to make a Ristretto

Ristretto @ The Java Cafe

How to make a Ristretto. A Ristretto is half a single shot, 1/2 oz. (15ml) of black coffee. It is also known as a "short black" in other parts of the world and a "Corto" in Italy. Because it is not a full Espresso it is usually a more dense syrupy coffee.

Steps for making an Ristretto using an Espresso machine:

1. Get hold of some dark roasted espresso beans. Oily-looking is the choice bean here. Use the darkest of the espresso coffee beans. Traditional Italian Style! Looking for dark roasted or espresso beans?

2. You want to grind these espresso beans until they are very fine.

3. Pack the grinds into the group (handle) of the espresso machine.

4. Place your cup/s under the group. Turned on your espresso machine. You should see a hazel brown crema appear at the surface of the coffee when its finished. Stop about 15 seconds after starting your brew. This should deliver around 1/2 oz. of coffee.

Now all you have to do is enjoy your Ristretto!!!
